A Long Way To Go (Ayr - Mackay - Grass Tree Beach - Sarina - Rockhampton - Mount Morgan (700km)

Größere Kartenansicht

Today we have a long way to go, about 700km. We leave the campground in Ayr around 9:30am back onto Bruce Highway south. On our way we are suddenly stopped by a police car. My immediate thought was - damned, another accident that will hold us up. But luckily it was just an oversized truck.

At around 2pm we leave the Highway to head to the seafront. North of Sarina we choose the remote village of Grasstree Beach. This small village lays in a bay with a long beach (which is at high tide fully covered with water.

Along the whole beachfront there is a nice park with playground, picknick areas and two BBQs. We can put our campervan almost next to the picknick area.

The kids go straight to the playground - and call us. They cannot use the slide because of "some animal".

Which turns out to be a little caudate.

So nothing for the BBQ and we have to stick with what we've brought :)

Prawns, Steak and Aussi Burgers...

After lunch we spend some time on the beach...

And Jeremia writes a warning in the sand: "Achtung Möwe" (Attention Birds)

This is for good reason. When the kids went to the toilet, they were attacked by a pair of birds that wanted to protect their nest.

They came extremely close and even picked on Joshua (who after that experience decided to stay in the campervan for the rest of the picknick)

Everytime we tried to cross their territory we have been attacked.

Jeremia and Jonah were fascinated and slightly scared.

After about two hours we leave this nice remote spot to head back to the highway.

We now drive till the sun goes down and the moon can be seen - looks different to the moon view in the northern hemisphere

At about 8:30pm we reach the camoground in Mount Morgan. About this spot more by tomorrow, just this much; man have digged in 99 years the biggest hole into the earth of the southern hemisphere.
