Wallaman Falls

Größere Kartenansicht

The falls are about 50km off the highway from Ingham in the Girringun National Park. In the region and in Ingham time seemed to have stopped about 50 years ago. The region is also known as the Tyto Wetlands named after the Eastern Grass Owl and is home to over 160 bird species plus mamals, reptiles and insects.

Stoney Creek tumbles 70m off the Seaview Range at 540m above sea level before plunging 268m in a clear, single fall to the 20m deep pool below.
This is Wallaman Falls, the highest, permanent, single-drop waterfall in Australia.

The beginnings of Wallaman Falls are anything bit humble. Several geological events created the landscape that you see today.

About 50 million years ago, movdment of the Earth's crust formed the edge of the continent that lies against the Coral Sea and the present day landforms began to form. An earlier Herbert River flowed towards the west. It is not known when it reachex its present east flowing course.

Continuous erosion caused the Herbert River Falls to retreat by around 40cm every 100 years. As the gorge became longer, it passed tributaries like Stoney Creek, which were then suspended. This created waterfalls like Wallaman, which in turn eroded their own gorges.

Our way back is again partly on slippery gravel roads, and due the heavy rain last night, even some trees have come down.

Further down the road a clear view on the mountain and the cost opens up.

The steep winding road gets even smaller...

...before we reach the flater costal land...

Short after we are back on the highway heading towards Townsville and further south. Although we had planned to travel a long distance today - ideally back to Airlie Beach, we have to change our plans as Bruce Highway gets closed just in front of us due to a heavy accident of two trucks on a bridge. As there is no suitable detour, we have to wait for more than two hours till the road is open again. So we decide to finish early and go to a nice campground in Ayr - with only 240km travelled today.
